Saaviks's Owl Treks Episodes 54 to 60: Thank you Saavik!

Episode #54 of cowowls in Space - Whammo! The hurtling, stretched ship popped out of the enormous black hole, leaving all the owls feeling like snapped elastics. There was a short delay while feathers were ruffled and beaks were adjusted. Captain Roy chirped - "Status report! "Helm, where are we?" Beakus, at the station did some calculations. "Captain, we aren't anywhere near where we were....Roy sighed. That seemed normal for this misson.
Then Tinkerowl came on the conn channel. "Captain, the damage to the owlithium crystals has stopped, but they are still damaged. It would be good to find fresh ones. "Oh, hey, we can talk again!" cried Belle. "Yeehaw!" Squawked Roy. He then looked around the bridge crew, realizing he had "Cowowled" again. He puffed up. "OK, so we have to find some planet that has raw crystals?" "Yes, Captain." He turned to the science station. "Well, don't just perch there Mr. Sprawk, find us some crystals." "Aye, captain." He crouched over his station, scanning nearby space. "There is a system nearby, but I don't recognize it - it hasn't been charted yet, but I'm detecting a rich mineral content, and it seems habitable....maybe we can resupply the food stores there too."

Episode #55 of Cowowls in Space - Slow train. Captain Roy called a meeting of senior officers in one hour, giving them enough time to get thier plans together before the session. They high tailed it to the conference room. They all were getting used to having thier heads upside down by now, plus the perpetual beak aches. Tinkerowl was first to report. "It will take 21 standard days to repair the ship, if everything goes to plan and we have the resourses we need to do it." "All right, said Roy. Sprawk?" "The planet has a wealth of things that should make it relatively easy to do what we need. Unfortunately, although it has much mineral wealth, it is uninhabitable. However, there is a large moon orbiting it that is ideal for life. It is filled with plant and some animals as well." "Very good" Said Roy. Let's get going then." They got back to thier stations and commenced the rather slow journey. The time was passed partly by cleaning up and organizing the ship...the constant shaking had made quite a mess and everyone was still grossed out by the "organic" bits still stuck to the walls & ceilings from bad timed horks.

Episode #56 of Cowowls in Space - The mysteries of impulse voyaging. Lt. Sprawk had estimated 47 days of travelling to get to the planet/moon system in addition to the 21 days of fixing the ship's hork drive engines. The trip harkened back to the days of old when it took years and years to get from system to system. In open space, pirates awaited among uncharted territories, asteroids and other objects loomed, and strange things abounded....those were the bad old days, depending on who you squawked to. It took four days to get from the edge of the target system to the fourth planet and its very green moon. The planet was basically a rock with no breathable air and one and a half times the gravity of Earth normal. Sprawk recommended a short stay for the first away team, backed up by Dr. HootHoy. "The intense gravity will take its toll on every owl down there. When they show signs of being horked out, beam them up."
"All right." said Roy. The party beamed down and immediately felt the intense drag on thier bodies. A young engineer owl, Burrowl, pulled out his owlcorder and started looking for owlithium crystals.

Episode #57 of Cowowls in Space - Mooning. After a largely uneventful mission gathering owlithium crystals, Engineer Tinkerowl was happily installing the new crystals with Burrowl assisting. Meanwhile, the ship was put in orbit around the lush, green moon. Commander Dale insisted on going in the first party, and Roy couldn't blame her. She was getting fed up with not doing much, and was due for starting a new clutch, she needed a break from sitting. Pearl, now recovered from her indisposition in the inside out universe, was also wanting to go, along with her sister Belle. Roy put his talons down on that, though, and Dale agreed with him. "It's a big unknown, my owlets, she said. And you haven't earned your wings yet. Things may happen that you can't handle." They pouted but there was nothing they could do. Dale and 6 other owls, including chief Nurse Cheeryowl, who was thinking there might be medicinal plants, were going down.
The owlporter whirred as it dissolved the owls and rebuilt them in a large clearing on the surface.

Episode #58 of Cowowls in Space - Green night. All the owls except for 2 security birds got out thier owlcorders and began scanning the area they popped up in. As they looked about, one young ensign pointed with a wing. "Look!" He hissed softly. Off in the distance, a softly glowing net of green points, like fireflies, was bobbing about in the distance. "Well?" asked Dale. "I'm not picking up any individual life signs, Commander - it seems to be just one large glob." Stated the ensign. They watched it dance, like a flock of small birds, whirling and diving, then hovering. A strange buzzing sound accompanied the beautiful spectacle. Suddenly, there was a boom, and it disappeared. "Well, that was weird!" Squawked Cheeryowl. Dale then ordered: "All right, let's proceed with caution, and stay together, everyone." They made good progress, and after several quiet hours, more landing parties were allowed to arrive. They found an abundant selection of plants and lots of food, in the form of small rodent like creatures and large bugs. Cheeryowl got dinged in the beak by the first one, a huge moth with purple wings. There was a green flash as it hit, accompanied by a soft squeak. It dropped to the ground. She scanned it, then popped it in her mouth. "Mmmm! I hope we can find more of these!" They continued, nibbling at various things as they went.

Episode #59 of Cowowls in Space - Stuffed owls. Eventually all the landing parties beamed back to the ship, waddling because they were too stuffed to walk. They now had stores enough to get them many parsecs, and felt confident enough even to get back to Earth, although it was many light years to thier home. The only lingering complaint was the still upside down beak problem.
Captain Roy conferred with the helm officer, Beakus, and the ship was pointed back at the weird planet and its star that had swallowed them up, and messed up their beaks. He was convinced that it was the only way to fix this aggravating situation. The younger owls made a disappointed hiss, but he glowered back at them and they closed thier beaks. "This is the only way to solve this, I believe, he said. No other efforts have succeeded here, it's time to go back to the source. I have sent Owlfleet a subspace message describing our problem." And that was that. It only took a day or two to get back to the system though, which, because of the "faces" on both planet and star, were labled by the crew as "Tweedledeet" and Tweedlesun", after an old tale called Owlice in Horkerland, where Owlice met two rotund and spoiled owlets who argued incessantly over a clam that had washed up on thier beach.

Episode #60 of Cowowls in Space - Buzz in the kitchen. As the evening's meal was being prepared for the Captain's Perch, the head chef started to hear a strange buzzing sound. He turned to find a green glowing bug like thing hovering above the main dish, and others floating and crawling about in various places, munching happily. He squawked and swatted at the thing, which let out a squeek and zinged out of reach. The chef hissed angrily and picked up a frying pan. "Come closer you little stinker!" "Oi! it said. You can't do that, I'm the ship's fairy!" "Ship's fairy my hork! You look like a flying cockroach!" "Am not!" The argument continued. Squawking spread as the kitchen staff tried to swat, smash and use cooking spray to bog down the "ship's fairies."
Finally they were all winded and puffed up in indignation. The chef then tried to go through cooking everything and they managed to get things done, but the green pains in the owlrear followed after, hovering over the table. Captain Roy was settling in and nearly choked on his liquidz when one lit on his beak. He swatted at it ineffectually. "Chef!" he squawked. Chef Beetz hopped over next to him. "I'm sorry, Captain, but I can't get rid of them! They say they're the ship's fairies!"

12 barn owl fascinating facts

Discover 12 fascinating facts about the beautiful barn owl.
1 The barn owl was voted Britain’s favourite farmland bird by the public in an RSPB poll in July 2007.
2 Historically, the barn owl was Britain’s most common owl species, but today only one farm in about 75 can boast a barn owl nest.
3 Barn owls screech, not hoot (that’s tawny owls).
4 The barn owl can fly almost silently. This enables it to hear the slightest sounds made by its rodent prey hidden in deep vegetation while it’s flying up to three metres overhead.
5 The barn owl’s heart-shaped face collects sound in the same way as human ears. Its hearing is the most sensitive of any creature tested.
6 Barn owls are non-territorial. Adults live in overlapping home ranges, each one covering approximately 5,000 hectares. That’s a staggering 12,500 acres or 7,100 football pitches!
7 It’s not uncommon for barn owl chicks in the nest to feed each other. This behaviour is incredibly rare in birds.
8 In order to live and breed, a pair of barn owls needs to eat around 5,000 prey items a year. These are mainly field voles, wood mice, and common shrews.
9 Though barn owls are capable of producing three broods of five to seven young each year, most breed only once and produce, on average, only two and a half young. 29 per cent of nests produce no young at all.
10 91 per cent of barn owls post-mortemed were found to contain rat poison. Some owls die as a direct result of consuming rodenticides, but most contain sub-lethal doses. The effects of this remain unknown.
11 In a typical year, around 3,000 juvenile barn owls are killed on Britain’s motorways, dual carriageways and other trunk roads. That’s about a third of all the young that fledge.
12 Everyone can help barn owls. Leave a patch of rough grassland to grow wild thus creating habitat for voles, erect a super-safe deep nest box, volunteer for your local barn owl group, switch to non-toxic rodent control
