9/28 to 9/29- THREE (3) on camera, more off: More parental luring**** Happy Birthday to LvOwls and Angowleyez***

Belle is 75, and Pearl is 71 days today
Be here tonight at 7 to celebrate more fun and continue with the LvOwls/Angowl BirthdayAbouts
Virtual presents are welcome.
Treats:

22:18   Treat to Pearl from unknown parent (delivered on roof, eaten on a flyabout)
22:44   Possible rat to Pearl from unknown parent (taken in box, attempted steal from Belle.  Pearl took to porch.  Belle stole from Pearl on porch and flew away w/ rat)

Flyabouts/Activity:
18:56  Pearl returns to the Hideout
18:58  Belle returns to the Hideout
20:10  Belle flyabout
20:55  Belle returns
21:01  Pearl flyabout, seen by OCG flying with Rale
21:07  Pearl returns
22:48  Belle flies off with her stolen treasured treat
23:31  Belle returns, looking guilty and goes into back of box.  Neither owlet will acknowledge each other for over 45 minutes.   owletsiblinggrudgeabout

Both owlets went on multiple fairly long flyabouts on their own, without us hearing the parents call for them.  Possible additional prey eaten offscreen.  Roy and Dale were around, off cam, with increased luring attempts.  We could see the owlets tracking the parents from the porch and owlets were vocalizing loudly, indicating the presence of the parents.

Thank you DodgerGirl!<3

From Hundon  "I logged in at around 1.30am, and left at 3.45am  There was a treat to Pearl at 1.50, got a pic of her with it in the box. No flyabouts whilst I was watching.

Episode 7:  “Days of Owl Lives”- From DodgerGirl
Belle returns to the Hideout after spending the day in her own palm
tree.  Shortly after, Pearl flies onto the HP from her special palm tree
too.  They avert each other’s eyes.  It’s too soon to talk about the
problem from last night.  They take up opposite corners on the porch.
Belle thinks “It’s really her fault.  I mean, she started it by mocking
me, making me smell the fresh gopher on her beak.  That’s just cruel.
Then she started tugging my feathers off of my head and yanking some
from my tail.  What was that all about??”   Pearl glances over her
shoulder, using her 270 degree turning radius ability, and thinks “I
don’t see what the big deal is.  I fly around more than she was.  I’m
bound to get the rewards that she doesn’t get since she is sitting on
her tushy on the porch.  Mom and Dad want me to fly to the hunting
grounds with them, so I do.  Admittedly I shouldn’t have pulled her
feathers, but they were harmless love tugs.  What’s the big deal?  Who
cares about the beak smelling incident.  I thought I was funny!!!”

So both remain in their corners of the porch, staring into the sky,
waiting for Roy and Dale.  If Mom and Dad find out about this tiff, we
are going to get scolded, possibly even literally grounded, with no
flights and (gasp) no gophers.  Belle turns to Pearl and, being the
oldest, kisses Pearl on her gopher-soaked beak and says, “I’m sorry”.
Pearl nudged Belle in the left wing and says, “I’m sorry too”.  They
both then return to the end of the porch, assuming their traditional
position.  Belle begins calling out “vole, vole, vole” and Pearl begins
calling out “VW, VW, VW”, slugging Belle when a VW bug goes by, just
‘cuz.

Birthday wishes from Hundon thank you!

Thank you Emmie!

12 barn owl fascinating facts

Discover 12 fascinating facts about the beautiful barn owl.
1 The barn owl was voted Britain’s favourite farmland bird by the public in an RSPB poll in July 2007.
2 Historically, the barn owl was Britain’s most common owl species, but today only one farm in about 75 can boast a barn owl nest.
3 Barn owls screech, not hoot (that’s tawny owls).
4 The barn owl can fly almost silently. This enables it to hear the slightest sounds made by its rodent prey hidden in deep vegetation while it’s flying up to three metres overhead.
5 The barn owl’s heart-shaped face collects sound in the same way as human ears. Its hearing is the most sensitive of any creature tested.
6 Barn owls are non-territorial. Adults live in overlapping home ranges, each one covering approximately 5,000 hectares. That’s a staggering 12,500 acres or 7,100 football pitches!
7 It’s not uncommon for barn owl chicks in the nest to feed each other. This behaviour is incredibly rare in birds.
8 In order to live and breed, a pair of barn owls needs to eat around 5,000 prey items a year. These are mainly field voles, wood mice, and common shrews.
9 Though barn owls are capable of producing three broods of five to seven young each year, most breed only once and produce, on average, only two and a half young. 29 per cent of nests produce no young at all.
10 91 per cent of barn owls post-mortemed were found to contain rat poison. Some owls die as a direct result of consuming rodenticides, but most contain sub-lethal doses. The effects of this remain unknown.
11 In a typical year, around 3,000 juvenile barn owls are killed on Britain’s motorways, dual carriageways and other trunk roads. That’s about a third of all the young that fledge.
12 Everyone can help barn owls. Leave a patch of rough grassland to grow wild thus creating habitat for voles, erect a super-safe deep nest box, volunteer for your local barn owl group, switch to non-toxic rodent control
