April 7 - 8 2:15 Billy on the Porch!

Fab Four Owlets still Home Alone -Bonnie and Clyde captured together, 15 treats and more !

All four at home April 7 2:30 pm screenshot by Tresbien

2:15 am Billy on the Porch (Twice per Hummerdad) for at least 6 minutes ! ) At least fifteen treats overnight, all Fling and Flies and Door to Beak  Deliveries!

TweetKathleen reports:
10:41 pm-Clyde came into the Hideout to rile up the owltlaws in order to get them to come outside - which works and Billy comes out several times tonight @ 10:56 and 11:04.  Stayed out longer @ 11:04.  Owlcamguy was around for most of the excitement and was kind enough to adjust video so we could see what was coming in the door. TY and many (clappy things) to you OCG!

LvOwl reports:
2:10am PST Clyde was in the box ! The Fab 4 were excited! Some were pecking and some were kissing him. He left and went to the Lookout perch. Billy went to the door all excited and then Clyde flew away.
2:15 am Billy exited the box!  Igel, NC7, turtledove and I watched as Billy spent the next 6 minutes walking on the porch and around the left corner. She looked down at the HP and all around, but didn't move from the porch. Guess who was at the door watching Billy? Jesse and Floyd! Jesse left his corner to watch his fave outside! Annie remained in the left front corner. Billy enjoyed flapping her wings on the porch and tried to get back in the box, but being blocked she couldn't.
2:21 Jesse and Floyd moved aside and let Billy back in. Being proud of herself, almost as much as we were, looked at us and walked around the box. Annie went to the door after Jesse and Floyd moved back. Jesse was kissing Billy, letting her know how proud he was of her. So cute.
Bonnie came back a couple of times, first time with a treat but dropped it either on the porch or the ground. Then she returned at 2:42 and chittered on the porch trying to get Annie to come outside to get the mouse, but she wouldn't. Bonnie then gave Annie the mouse and she gulped it down.

Flew straight up. This was a still taken from the video capture). What an exciting night in the Parlor watching the owltlaws in the Hideout.!"- Summary and photo by TweetKathleen

12 barn owl fascinating facts

Discover 12 fascinating facts about the beautiful barn owl.
1 The barn owl was voted Britain’s favourite farmland bird by the public in an RSPB poll in July 2007.
2 Historically, the barn owl was Britain’s most common owl species, but today only one farm in about 75 can boast a barn owl nest.
3 Barn owls screech, not hoot (that’s tawny owls).
4 The barn owl can fly almost silently. This enables it to hear the slightest sounds made by its rodent prey hidden in deep vegetation while it’s flying up to three metres overhead.
5 The barn owl’s heart-shaped face collects sound in the same way as human ears. Its hearing is the most sensitive of any creature tested.
6 Barn owls are non-territorial. Adults live in overlapping home ranges, each one covering approximately 5,000 hectares. That’s a staggering 12,500 acres or 7,100 football pitches!
7 It’s not uncommon for barn owl chicks in the nest to feed each other. This behaviour is incredibly rare in birds.
8 In order to live and breed, a pair of barn owls needs to eat around 5,000 prey items a year. These are mainly field voles, wood mice, and common shrews.
9 Though barn owls are capable of producing three broods of five to seven young each year, most breed only once and produce, on average, only two and a half young. 29 per cent of nests produce no young at all.
10 91 per cent of barn owls post-mortemed were found to contain rat poison. Some owls die as a direct result of consuming rodenticides, but most contain sub-lethal doses. The effects of this remain unknown.
11 In a typical year, around 3,000 juvenile barn owls are killed on Britain’s motorways, dual carriageways and other trunk roads. That’s about a third of all the young that fledge.
12 Everyone can help barn owls. Leave a patch of rough grassland to grow wild thus creating habitat for voles, erect a super-safe deep nest box, volunteer for your local barn owl group, switch to non-toxic rodent control
