Cowliflower's Corner- Fun Facts and Florets from an Owl Lovin' Master Gardener

_____Cowliflower's Corner: Fascinating Fun Facts Florets from an Owl Lovin' Master Gardener~ Views from Mollys box to your box ~

August 31st:
Fledge Facts and Florets From Cowliflower!
Fledge = First time an owlet steps out of the box onto the porch.  Typically 51 to 57 days old.
Fly = First hop/flight to a close perch, around 54 to 58 days old.  However oldest = 63.
First Day Roosting out of Box = 66 to 76 days old, depending on who is still in the box.  And, it can be earlier.**
**For example, Ashley (Molly C2) at 58 days old missed the landing trying to fly back to the box from a perch.  She went to the ground & and reappeared - flew back in! - the following night.  Just a reminder that owlets can climb trees with their powerful claws and beaks if they find themselves on the ground.  So have no fear and enjoy the show!
Belle could go out anytime,  but surely within a day or two after Labor Day!  She's the lead and the others will follow soon enough.
 Thank you Cowliflower!

March 28th:
Sometime on March 25-26, after owlet Austin's hatch, Carlos put himself up to the challenge of 24/7 recording of his ustream feed.  As they say, the rest is (YouTube) history!   (And let's not forget Austin (the grandson) who edited all those videos.)  For those of us who missed all four hatchings live, at least we got to see Wesley's hatch on video!  You can see it again here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozlb-vY6uoM      ***** Happy Birthday, Wesley!! !******

March 24:
When I read Carlo's blog this morning I was a little slow on the uptake.  Why or how come is Carlos calling March 25 "Molly and McGee Day?"  I could not remember.  I was puzzled.  Maybe you all were not puzzled, but I was.  For those of you in my boat.... it's taken about two hours, but it has just suddenly occurred to me.  This is the day last year that the Mayor of San Marcos issued an official proclamation that March 25 is "Molly and McGee Day in the City of San Marcos, CA.

More memories of that day come to mind now.  It was a Thursday, late afternoon for me, and I was at home watching with thousands of others for the impending hatch of the 3rd egg (i.e., the yet to be hatched Austin).  I had missed the hatch of both Max and Pattison, and I was dang if I was going to miss the next one.  I had to go to the kitchen for about 15 mins to check on something on the stove for dinner.  When I returned, Austin had hatched - at 3:11pm PDT!  I had missed this by just a few minutes!!!   I was so disappointed.  My only consolation was that (as I recall) Carlos also missed it, and also by just a few minutes.  Turned out (as I recall) that Carlos had been tied up outside talking with someone in his yard about Molly and McGee Day - a reporter or the Mayor or someone.
              Them's my recollections anyway....

March 23rd: Happy First Birthday Pattison!

BarleyCorn sang for us all -  "care about the world around."  As spring rushes toward us, consider planting things that attract beneficial insects and bees!!  What are "beneficial insects?"  They are insects that prey on "pest" insects.  For example, Lady bugs and Lacewings both have a voracious appetite for aphids, and who wants aphids?!" Parasitic wasps and certain kinds of flies are also *your* friend!
Before you go to the nursery, get out your browser and Google "plants for beneficial insects!"  You can do the same for bees, monarch butterflies (caterpillars develop only on milkweed) and swallowtail butterflies (dill, parsley, fennel for caterpillars).  To be continued.....

March 21st: Today is Max's First Birthday! Happy Birthday, Max, whereever you are!

March 18th, 2011:

Here are some first day out comparisons: Bonnie's first day out of the box happened when Jesse, the youngest owlet, was 29 days old. Molly was out of the box for the first time when Wesley was 22 days old in C1. She stayed out for 2 days, came back for 1 day and then was out for good.

In C2, Molly left the owlets alone for the first time when Carrie was just 17 days old. She was gone for 3 days then, came back and was in the box for 5 days, and then left for good. Carrie really needed her Mommy back - it was during the 5 days Molly came back that she attended to Carrie's eyes.

Publisher's Note: Cowliflower, our unsung record keeper.. Many folks do not know that Cowliflower was not only the Unofficial record keeper for Molly C1 and C2, she started gathering the information which lead to the Overnight and various Rodentia Reports, assisted by the Moderators and chatters.

Although she is shy, we would like to share some of Cowli's hard work (a special note of thanks to OB Moderator TwoCatsMom, who assisted Cowli and kept diligent notes during C1.)

12 barn owl fascinating facts

Discover 12 fascinating facts about the beautiful barn owl.
1 The barn owl was voted Britain’s favourite farmland bird by the public in an RSPB poll in July 2007.
2 Historically, the barn owl was Britain’s most common owl species, but today only one farm in about 75 can boast a barn owl nest.
3 Barn owls screech, not hoot (that’s tawny owls).
4 The barn owl can fly almost silently. This enables it to hear the slightest sounds made by its rodent prey hidden in deep vegetation while it’s flying up to three metres overhead.
5 The barn owl’s heart-shaped face collects sound in the same way as human ears. Its hearing is the most sensitive of any creature tested.
6 Barn owls are non-territorial. Adults live in overlapping home ranges, each one covering approximately 5,000 hectares. That’s a staggering 12,500 acres or 7,100 football pitches!
7 It’s not uncommon for barn owl chicks in the nest to feed each other. This behaviour is incredibly rare in birds.
8 In order to live and breed, a pair of barn owls needs to eat around 5,000 prey items a year. These are mainly field voles, wood mice, and common shrews.
9 Though barn owls are capable of producing three broods of five to seven young each year, most breed only once and produce, on average, only two and a half young. 29 per cent of nests produce no young at all.
10 91 per cent of barn owls post-mortemed were found to contain rat poison. Some owls die as a direct result of consuming rodenticides, but most contain sub-lethal doses. The effects of this remain unknown.
11 In a typical year, around 3,000 juvenile barn owls are killed on Britain’s motorways, dual carriageways and other trunk roads. That’s about a third of all the young that fledge.
12 Everyone can help barn owls. Leave a patch of rough grassland to grow wild thus creating habitat for voles, erect a super-safe deep nest box, volunteer for your local barn owl group, switch to non-toxic rodent control
